Ontopic Random Computer-Electronics Thread

Update: Fedex officially fessed up to losing my headphones and is paying out, and Grado's sending me a new set.

Turns out they delivered my headphones to the correctly named street in the wrong town, despite my address having the right town name and postal code.

And the street in the wrong town is short and doesn't even count up to my house number, so I guess they left a number off and took a wild guess of what house number was the right one? And then they left the package on a front porch, writing "FRONT PORCH" in the signature field for a package that required delivery signature.

Great job, idiots.

That had zero to do with safety. It had to do with up until FDR there was never a need for anyone to fly. And the only reason he did was the War. Prior to that they did everything the needed via rail and car. It wasn't like now where POTUS would travel all over the place. He stayed in DC where his job required him to be.
That simply isn't true.

If you'd prefer, I can litter this thread with videos of Tesla's avoiding accidents that would have been if it wasn't a Tesla. Your choice!

:lol: I used to keep my networking certs up to date - out of date as they are I wouldn't create the abortion in the back room here. I'm neurotically neat & tide person when it comes to wiring and shit. They have someone from a local small business phone network service keep cobbling shit together here... The owner's GF setup the server so that is another f'n mess. *

It's almost like a visual presentation on telecommunications over the ages, all in a 3' square area.View attachment 6834
Almost /r/cablefail worthy.

Finally got around to buying two 4TB harddrives and installing them into the Synology DS218 that I bought off a friend last summer I think. Migrated from an old DS110j (yeah stupid old and slow). Not too bad of a process to do.

Noice.

I bought a DS1019+ last month.

Got a 256gb ssd cache and 5x8tb drives in SHR-1 in it.

Slowly migrating everything to it and making my older 1812+ the backup.

I have a love/hate relationship with Synology. Love their software. Don't like how underpowered their NAS units are. Web admin can be slowwwwwwwwwww. Higher end units have known powersupply problems and they are near impossible to find replacements if not under warranty. Youtube has a lot of videos of Synology NAS boxes shitting the bed outside of warranty. Best you can do is find scavenged parts from another unit. :|

So. Amazon has had people listening to clips from Alexa in order to better teach Alexa how to parse human speech. Teams working nine hours a day and processing as much as 1000 clips per shift.

In other news, @Jehannum's pants were reported as too tight due to a "vindication boner"
So, I made a comment about penis size compensation on one of those "install a train horn in your truck" ads on facebook, now all I get are "install a train horn in your truck" ads.

How did they know my ding-dong is small?

On another forum, a guy complained about ads with skimpily-clad females that weren’t SFW in his opinion and he got upset when I told him to use a different computer for porn. Then about a hundred posts saying the same thing made him start to believe.

“I never watch porn, let alone on a computer!” Uh huh.

I'm a little worried that the inevitable machine uprising will have learned many of its expletives from the Google Home Mini that @fly gave me that I keep in the garage.

I swear a lot in there.

Ugh, deprecating a member of an enum is so grossssssss in C++-11.

Code:
enum ProfileType {
    StaticProfile
};

#ifdef ENABLE_DEPRECATED_CODE
  __attribute__ ((deprecated)) const ProfileType DynamicProfile = ProfileType(StaticProfile+1);
#define DEFAULT_PROFILE_TYPE DynamicProfile
#else
#define DEFAULT_PROFILE_TYPE StaticProfile
#endif

That's quite a bit different to me than, "OMG AMAZON IS LISTENING TO ME!!!!111oneone" I'd hope that we all understand how AI learns: we tell it what to do.

While I agree in general, the scale of this tips it towards the negative for me.
You can ask someone what they just typed from dictation and they will often just draw a blank. Those poor fucks are probably bored to death and scarcely paying attention. Not nearly as invasive as the two party line of yesteryear.
