Ontopic Random Computer-Electronics Thread

I have a question and I’m willing to accept verbal abuse from you cats in exchange for a half an answer.

Is it possible for a service outfit (like Geek Squad or whoever) to connect to an unbootable Sony Vaio and extract pictures and documents off of the drives and put it on another media device, like a thumb drive thing? Or even CDs?

Quite possibly. Depends why it isn't bootable and how much you want to spend. Sometimes it isn't the hard drive at issue - internally some of the different components use different voltages and the power supply system gets fucked. Hard drives are often fine yet unbootable simply because one or more crucial files got fucked. I'd take a crack it for a buzz and some BS for a friend. Someone at a computer shop would probably give you an idea if it was salvageable for $30-ish.

It’s kind of strange (isn’t everything?), it was fine, then it sat for over a year still plugged in but never turned on, and when I started it up, it wouldn’t and I got the DOS screen.

Keep in mind I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about.

The “recovery discs” that I had burned when the system was brand new didn’t work. I’d get to disc three or four out of seven(?) and it would fail. The only other things I’ve tried were trying to get it to recognize an external CD drive in case the two in the tower were faulty and I changed the battery in the motherboard.

If the hard drive works at all, someone at a shop(or me) would just shuck that hard drive out of there and try to get it to slave(run but not control) on another machine, then get control of the user folders and get your shit back. Basically what Asa was trying to do a week or so ago, or as I had to do 2-3 months ago on my laptop. Few feelings as good as getting your old stuff back. Even if 95% of it was shit, the rest is :heart:

What I'm doing now with the data recovery stuff is essentially what you're looking for. Cost $20 for the adapter for the HD and then the program to pull data.
It's pretty simple, dont even need the program to pull data unless the drive is damaged

I appreciate it, but ReCuva was enough for me to figure out what I was looking for was gone from the good HDs I have. Now I have to try and figure out why two Toshiba 2.5"ers aren't talking to the computer when hooked up to power and a data cord. They may be shot
 
Depending on what is on the HD, sometimes it's worth going full tilt. 2 different times I had a very important drive go completely tits up, the one you could see a chip was smoked on the controller card. Both times I bought an identical drive online for less than $50(since they were already a few years old), swapped the controller cards, resuscitated the presumed dead drive and was able to get everything back. Then swapped the controller card back and pitched the old drives. No point in trusting a drive with several thousand hours on the spindle already.
 
Friends moved recently, we had a couple fall/winter traditions with them, one of them was a drinking game from one of half a dozen movies.

I'd like to try and do some sort of Skype setup that allows us to recreate this in our respective homes ~900 miles from each other.

What would be the best way of doing this?

Could depend on how many people and what type of games. Any need to mime things out or act out movie scenes that would need full body or multiple people in a shot.

Idk about the tech end of it but thinking something like a wider angle group shot could display on a TV and then a laptop on a lazy Susan in the middle of the table or something for close shots of each person's turn?

Stuff to get a better feeling of being there and being involved instead of "watching stuff happen to other people".
