Ontopic Random Computer-Electronics Thread

Welp, back up and running. The only major casualty are my virtualbox images. Hopefully the drives aren't corrupted, but the .vbox files sure don't want to work anymore.

The youtube vidja I just watched said the welding was done with a laser.

Hopefully not attached to a shark.
The two ways I know to reliably produce helium tight bonds are indeed laser welding, or explosive welding. Both of which are cool as shit

There's a WD patent where you measure the helium concentration in a drive by pulsing energy into a thermistor and then measuring how quickly it cools back down. This measures the thermal conductivity of the gas in the drive, and you can determine the helium concentration from that. Clever and dirt cheap. I'm betting everyone else licensed that.

Pressurizing the drive and using a barometer works, unfortunately you can't use MEMS barometers in a helium atmosphere and non-MEMS ones are expensive.

The single nic in the Plex/ryzen server decided to die.

No pci-e slots available.

Currently running with a usb 3 AC wireless adapter.

Meh.

if you have a usb c there are plenty of straightline usb-c to gigabit ethernet adapters that are pretty much as good as built in.

usb-c is an awesome standard
