No that was the group of people who broke in but then all the neighbors came in and killed most of that crew after they killed main character. They the were going to kill the rest of the family but then the homeless guy saved them. Also the daughters boyfriend tried to kill the dad right away.

First 20 seconds. you clearly see its the Polite leader killing him (that's really what they call him on imdb). Then the neighbors kill him along with his crew.

You are right about the boyfriend, but apparently he thought that would be a way to be able to date the daughter.
