FYI PS3 = Super Computer

  1. Well, bundling them does.

And now you can do it.

Researcher at umass gives step by step instructions on how to take a bevy of PS3's, the Fedora core, and turn them into a super computer, for about 4k.

As a price point, using the TeraGrid super computer, a single simulation can run 5000 hours, and cost a buck an hour. And that's a rental price.

  2. This will only work until Thursday. And it won't work on the Slim. Sony is patching the ability to install "Install Other OS" option. And it was never available in the Slim model.

  3. The .mil is doing something similar.

  4. This will continue to work past thursday if you choose not to update.

The things you lose out on by not updating I doubt will concern anyone actually using (lol) a ps3 farm for supercomputing.

  5. This is very true. I just miss running YDL with emulators. Full HTPC + full internet + office apps + emulation + best BluRay player on the market = PS3 awesomeness.
