Officers Handle 'Suicide By Cop' Situation

OMAHA, Neb. -- There have been 10 officer-involved shootings in Omaha in 2010, and half of them involved a death. That was nearly the case in Papillion recently.

The incident took place in a quiet neighborhood last Friday morning when officers responded to a 911 call in which a woman said she was a victim of domestic violence.

"They saw a white female standing in the front yard of the residence holding a teddy bear," said Lt. Chris Whitted of the Papillion Police Department.

She was also holding a loaded .45-caliber handgun and pointed it at officers Pat Nastase, Robert Morrell and Joshua Black. But the officers noticed there was no round in the gun's chamber because the slide on the gun was in the wrong position. That meant the weapon could not be fired.

Whitted said the woman wanted the officers to shoot her."She told the officers that she just wasn't able to kill herself and that she wanted police to do it for her," Whitted said.

A recording from one of the officers' cruiser cameras captured the officers trying to talk her out of it. After about 15 minutes, the woman surrendered peacefully, police said.

Ironically, the day before the incident, Papillion officers went through training that included "shoot, don't shoot" scenarios involving the same kind of handgun the woman had, Whitted said.

"We're extremely proud of the officers and how they were able to recognize that slide was open," said Whitted. "This was a very volatile situation and could have turned deadly very, very easily."
Awesome! I have dislike for cops but I have to give credit where credit is due. Situation handled very professionally, exactly how they are trained.
