So doing service for the government isn't giving back to that same system?

The point is that paying taxes is still doing something. You now want to qualify it with physically forcing someone to do something. The point remains that your core belief is not about forcing someone to do something they don't want to do, it's about forcing people to do something that you don't agree with.

And requiring service for benefits does not force anyone to do anything. The service would then be entirely voluntary. Your mistake is in thinking that government - and thus, the rest of the citizens that fund it - owes them something. The world owes you absolutely jack squat.

I actually agree with you. Civil service is a very good idea and I don't think you should be a fully citizen unless you do some. If you don't want to do it (non-violent etc) then you should have to do some other kind of governmental work to entitle you to reap the benefits of your society instead of getting it all for free. You either do it and you get benefits or you don't and you look after yourself completely.

ahh ok. i can agree with that, though I'd rather find a way for more people to an education without acquiring a butt ton of debt.

Unfortunately universities are full-fledge for profit companies. Unless our government/people put more funding towards education, it will always be retardedly expensive.

Im starting my student loan payments at the end of this month. I have >45k to pay and that makes me mad, but oh well. My fault for enrolling.

Still will not work with the current mentality in this country that socialism is baaaaaad!

Once people pull their heads out of their asses and realize that capitalism by itself is completely flawed, then society can progress. It will also take people to start giving a fuck about each other also.

The biggest issue for the US to deal with regarding going to a more socialist life is taxes. We complain about taxes but we are one of the lowest taxed western countries. The countries with a higher level of socialism and State provided items have a much higher tax rate. Those programs while free to use have to get paid from somewhere. The key is finding the right balance.

tsrh.

and along with that is also the problem of everyone constantly being told that private sector is always better and cheaper. That just isn't true in every circumstance.

The reason so many things are done private here is because it allows for the ability to grow and shrink on demand. Due to protection items laid out to treat everyone perfectly fair it's next to impossible to get rid of someone on the private sector even if you cut the programs. They are just shifted somewhere else. On the private side it it's not needed and it's cut you don't have to deal with it. It's no different than when companies contract out services. It allows them to adjust on their annual fiscal budget without having to deal with the issue of directly cutting manpower.

This is ok for some things. Other things need public oversight.

Public universities just can't keep up with private ones. I have tons of coworkers that worked for states schools and bitch about how there was always no money and the horrible bureaucracy at state colleges compared to working here. Our Equestrian center has real horses.

I didn't read this whole thread so I don't know what opinions have been expressed, but I don't like the poll because it doesn't include any answer I could choose. The SAT question in question was an opinion writing prompt. What the students would actually be graded on is their ability to write and form opinions, not the content of what they wrote. I think some people could complain about any topic they chose as a prompt. Some people wouldn't like if they were forced to have a political opinion, or a religious one, or an opinion about fashion, or design, or their favorite color even. The students were not required to have any knowledge of pop culture, the were just required to write an opinion about it. So if their thoughts were "I don't watch reality TV, I think it is stupid, and I think it is ruining our society, all they needed to do was write that down. That's not really difficult. If they can't do that, then they shouldn't pass this portion of the test anyway.
