dowdy? grunt? I have never heard those words used in association with food stuffs
the first time i heard of blueberry grunt i was at a restaurant sitting at the "kids" table with my brother and sister. The waitress included it in the list when she told us the desserts. We were so shocked to hear a term we associated with passing gas (to us, a grunt was a fart) used to describe a dessert that we all looked at each other and tried desperately not to laugh. It lasted a few seconds, then we completely lost it.

Still one of the most memorable laughing fits I've ever had.

grunt refers to the sound it makes in the oven when the air trapped under the crust tries to escape. pan dowdy refers to how crappy it looks, but never mind how awesome it tastes

a pastry is what a crisp makes me think of. sort of like a danish or something like that. I dunno. I go by the food's look and taste and never remember what it is called.
