Food Pests finding ways around GMOs...

http://www.futurity.org/science-technology/pests-mutate-to-chomp-on-modified-crops/

Apparently, bugs are becoming immune to crops genetically modified to be poisonous to them. Natural selection at work here. Seems obvious that this would happen. These GMOs obviously increase yield, which means we can feed more people for less money. However, nature ALWAYS wins.

Wat do?

Stop GMOs. Get back to keeping things simple. :hs:

So what if we can't feed everyone. We waste so much already and the population is out of control. It would do us good to have less food.

:waw: No, not "so what" at all. GMOs are horrible but that doesn't mean starving more people is a better solution. Figure it out an alternative first, and when you do, then phase out GMOs. But that will never happen here because the citizens are united!

Its not the governments job to feed us and GMOs are the government. We are fully capable of growing our own food and we should.

GMOs are the government.

Um, ALL produce and animals are ALL GMO. Just the act of breeding (a form of accelerated man-made evolution) features of plants "naturally" is modifying the genetic make up of the plants or animals. Any time a farmer voluntarily chooses to breed two of his tallest corn plants together to make tall offspring, you have just genetically modified that plant. Doing it in a laboratory is just faster, but in the end still the same thing.

Its fucking with mother nature on a much larger scale than farmers acting alone.

Yes and no. For example, there is no way you can get a plant that secretes pesticides through any selective breeding program that doesn't involve comic book style mutant plants.

Sure, if you want to split hairs. However, you know what GMOs mean. It's not the same as selective breeding.

[h=1]Genetically Engineered Food Quick Facts:[/h]
  • No crops on the market today are genetically engineered to increase crop yield, resist drought, or reduce chemical fertilizer use. They haven't helped third world countries, they aren't feeding the world, and they haven't lowered food prices at all.
  • GE food has never been proven safe for human consumption; scientists have no idea what it will do to people who eat it. There is a significant body of scientific evidence that has proven serious human health risks associated with it.
  • As far as U.S. regulatory agencies are concerned, if a biotech company says its products are safe, that is enough for approval.
  • Genetically engineered food is not labeled in the United States. At the same time, more than 40 countries have either banned GE food outright or have laws requiring the labeling of it—giving citizens in those countries the freedom to choose not to eat it.

Wrong. Being resistant to RoundUp, for example, certainly increases yield. Many times over.

Find ten studies that show its bad, and I can find 10 studies saying its good. Same thing with eating Skittles or hay.

Untrue, they are tested by the government along with the industry.

Group think and panic doesn't ensure you have the correct answer.

Not saying that GMOs are all roses and candy, but I'm pretty sure there is nothing unbiased on that site.
