official vista launch tonight

Wouldnt they always have to have a multi-install copy? For schools and such?

we deploy thousands of computers a year that we image via the network...there is no way in hell they are going to require companies like us to have a unique physical cd involved in every install

there's no way that's the case or they just put altiris out of business

KMS activation.

Basically KMS will be used in corporate situations. You will install it on a server and point all the other machines to check in with it every 180 days. Product keys are not kept on the various machines at all. If the machines haven't talked to the KMS after 180 days Vista will drop back to reduced functionality mode and it will also not allow you to log in until you plug it back into the network.

For situations like ours where there will be machines that never reach the network they will use MAK activation. MAK is similar to normal product keys in that it still will have to be activated, however it can only be done a set number of times. Thus if they say purchased 5,000 activations and then later on do an audit and realize they only got 4,800 of them then they know people are taking them now.

Bill Gates could donate all of his money today (assuming he kept his investments), and in a few years would be a billionaire again.

Isn't he still large majority share-holder or something like that? I heard he was in the realm of like 30% or something.

Question for you gentlemen that have worked with Server 2K3 and Vista. If Windows 2K and XP are NT 5.0 and 5.1 respectively. Then what version of NT is Server 2K3 and Vista?

server '03 is 5.2...dunno about vista but presumably it would be 5.3
