I see the new Gov. killed the high speed rail project for Tampa. This is like the 5th time it's passed only to get killed before it starts. He turned back the Federal grant money today. I just can't understand why FL is so afraid of public transport more importantly a rail line. Even worse for Tampa is that was one thing going to keep the Rays in the Bay area. I know most of you don't like the Rays but any pro sports team is good for the city.

I also saw he is cutting some of the education funding. Like Florida can handle anymore cutbacks in education; we're in the top ten of the lowest test scores or something. I can't remember, but I know its embarassing.

That and the crap medical was the main reason I left. Mini Flop was high honor roll in Tampa and she is fighting to pass in CO. They are so much ahead here.

Ya, school is supposed to be challenging. Otherwise, nothing is learned.

It's too bad our country doesn't put much into education while other countries teach their children more than one language.

 school should only be supplementary to their learning anyways. if the parents are involved in a kids education, they're going to end up retarded regardless of how fancy or expensive or challenging the schools they goto are.

this country spends waaaay more than other countries on education already and we still end up churning out dumb dumbs and people want to blame 'the system' or the 'the government' or 'the schools'...

Cutting High Speed rail is the right decision, IMHO. A high speed rail link of less than 500 miles is pointless. This was only 1/5th that.

Don't get me wrong. I am not a fan of our governor at all, but this was a good decision, as there was a high potential for HSR to become a giant boondoggle and put florida taxpayers on the hook for a couple billion over the top.

We DO need a light rail system in Tampa, for sure. We're too small a city to have the horrendous traffic problems we have. Light Rail did wonders for Denver, and I can see it doing the same for Tampa.

Floridians are too fucking dumb (well, many of them) to even be able to tell the difference between Light Rail and HSR though, based on many of the comments I have read.

Yeah. Scott wants dumb floridians because it was the 50% of retarded fucking florida that voted his ass into office in the first place.

The one time I drove through Tampa, you're correct Duke, there's no excuse for that kind of traffic.

At least part of the reason for that (From what I saw) are the cross streets that "end" at something then continue on after a couple of blocks, but one has to detour around them generating snarls when you hit the next street that actually goes through.

Yes but the hsr between tpa and mco was just the first link in the hub connecting tpa, mco, mia, and jax. So yes I think it was a good idea. Just an option to give tourists to go from Disney to the beach in clearwater would have been huge for the state.

Also Tampa is not designed or zoned for a light rail. There is no central work or living areas that would make sense to run stops. Everything is just shotguned out with no rhyme or reason.

A good point, in a sense. I'd counter with this.

Making your first run of Light rail run from New Tampa, say, from Bruce B. Downs starting about 5 miles east of I-75 down into downtown tampa, and running around downtown tampa, using, and augmenting the tampa trolley tracks, would be an immense first step. It would basically mimic what Denver did taking light rail up from Highlands ranch into downtown denver, right about the same time they added coors field. What denver was like before those two, versus what it became after, is a matter of fact. It changed denver from being a dead town at night with little soul to being a place people wanted to not only work AND play in, but live in too.

It's what Tampa needs, not right away, but over the next 10 years, to become something other than a Detroit on the suncoast.

It also helps alleviate the stupidly retarded congestion that is I-275 north of I-4.

You're missing the point though. In Denver the rail runs basically downtown and to DTC. I ride it almost everyday and it's 90% people commuting for work either downtown or in the DTC. In Tampa there is no central working areas. Even look at the Tampa folks on here none of you work in the same areas. No city has had a successful light rail based on entertainment the money maker is the commuter.

That's because the Fed is involved with it, bring it all back to local funding I say.
Agreed, plus all of the unfunded mandates.

Agreed. I can tell from riding the MBTA during commuter times and going to entertainment events. They lose money during the non-commuter hours.
