I know theac uses his time scouring eMusic and getting emails from [ame="http://www.amazon.com/music-rock-classical-pop-jazz/b/ref=sa_menu_mu1?ie=UTF8&node=5174"]Amazon[/ame]. He's a pretty good source for really good music, but his tastes don't always run along the same lines as mine. His favorite band is [ame="http://theblackcrowes.com/"]The Black Crowes[/ame] and mine are [ame="http://nin.com"]NIN[/ame] and the [ame="http://www.citizenfish.com/"]Subhumans[/ame].

Pre-kids, I used to go see bands all the time and kept up with music mags, but it has been put to the side for lack of funding and time constraints. Basically, we're broke and don't have much time. Thorn and I have renewed our interests in music and have started searching for new stuff. We've used Pandora and Last.FM, but I have found both lacking in understanding my music tastes. Just now, I ran across Aimee Street, but have yet to give it a try.

What do the rest of you use for new music discovery?

All over the place- I like Pandora but I always forget about it (I used to listen all the time at work, but now that I'm home I rarely tune in).

Starting threads on my other msg boards "what are you listening to/recommend me some good tunes"
Also I like AllMusic.com Type in bands that you like and they typically have a list of "similar artists" or "sounds like" and I'll check some of those out.

I do thump-up songs. But I hear the same ones everytime.
tell it not to play those songs for a month to give you a respite.

i use pandora and the bar around the corner from my house. they have great music and people who play great music on the jukebox (it's an internet connected jukebox so you can play almost anything).\

i discovered that recorder band i posted on here when they played a show at my bar.

pandora, revolver magazine, concerts, and two friends who know metal genre of music pretty good. also I look at the record label companies, and see who they are fronting. if I like this band, perhaps I might like others on the same label. out of all of these, I use concerts the most. I like to see what the band can do live vs. what was done on the album. i.e. not sound like shit vs. the overproduced, cleaned up album.

Sampler CDs, dunno if you can get them where you live but record labels send the shop around here like quaterly samplers that they hand out.

Related bands, NPR (usually a little slow to pick up new stuff but pretty solid, there are a couple shows that review music).

Looking up songs that Ive heard little bits of on tv shows and whatnot.

It's a lot of sifting through shit to find one or two good names.
