that's what i said [never having visited] - he touts it as the land of opportunity and low house prices.

he works with JAR here, but will be working for the FAA when he moves there, it's a pretty big salary drop, but he imagines his QOL will be better.

don't really know why - 125k GBP per annum isn't exactly detraction from your QOL...

Um, if he's making that much he should just stay there. I would recommend if he is going to a place with low cost of living above all else, go to Cleveland/Detroit/Midwest area. Just as many jobs (none), cheap living expenses (like REAL cheap) but good beer culture and seasons.
