That was propaganda most likely. Those things are armored in all critical areas to withstand 23mm rounds. That's a lot larger than anything an AK47 should be able to shoot.
Dont believe everything you hear, a couple have been brought down by heavy small arms fire+rpgs but it's rare compared to number deployed. A10s can be employed in mostly the same capacity though with better results.
