Cats love eyecontact. If you're having trouble with it being too timid I think sitting down and looking it in the eye is great to make it trust you, let it approach you and don't move too fast or it might get scared.
We found a pursian cat that had been recently stitched up in the middle of the road one day and when we got it home it was shy as hell and we sat with it all night until it would come near us and cuddle up.
