Moral Dilemma

I plan to pick the brain of the instructor and sales guy at Cabellas.

Rule number one of gun buying: Look and touch at Cabelas, buy somewhere else.

They rape you on prices over there. If it's at all possible to get the product you want someplace else for cheaper then do it. Just like video card shopping, really.

Here's what my AR looks like now...

so a somewhat amusing story from boot camp

our primary marksmanship instructor was telling us about a childhood friend of his wife's, an army ranger. so he says they all went out for dinner one day and they were talking shop and the conversation turned to marksmanship qualifications.

the ranger asked our PMI "so what kind of optics do you guys use". turns out the army rangers qualify on their rifles at 300 yards with scopes

our recruits train at 500 yards with iron sights

yeah, rangers lead the way

I call Barbra Streisand on both accounts.

The only ones who use scopes are the snipers in each branch of the military.

While the M-16 is fairly accurate to a 1/4 mile. There is no way the average grunt, wingnut, or leatherneck will be able to target something at 500 yards through the iron sites of an M-16. Hell, most of them have problems with targets at 300 yards.
Scopes are used by far more than just snipers. In fact, just about everyone in the average infantry unit will mount a scope on his M16-A4 or M-4.

But as far as our own qual distance, we were trained to hit center mass on a human sized target at 500 yards with an M16-A2. Iron sights. That's how we qualify. Don't hit 'em, don't qual.

Designated Marksmen Rifle, FTW. That's probably what my next AR-15 build is going to be actually.

Nice! I REAAAAALLLY want to go to the gun range again, but there isn't one close to us to be convenient. :(

Next time we head to Elks you guys can come over and we will make a day of it. Remember Dave, not crazy eye brow but the other one who we went to Reno 911 with, he has a beautiful brand new AR. You gotta join us!!!

I need to find a way to convince them to buy more guns. They already have one, and the addiction should have taken hold, yet they resist.
