I finally got my new boss to approve my request to go to the BlackHat/Defcon Security Conference in Vegas. I've gone the last 6 years and have never had a problem getting my previous bosses’ approvals, but this year -- ack!

It took 2 weeks of emails, a formal writeup of the costs and company benefits, a round of "I don't think that training class you want to take is appropriate - go find another" from my Director's Senior Director, and a lot of sweet-talking and good behavior and FINALLY I get the go ahead.

So - the wife and I will be making our yearly pilgrimage to Sin City at the end of July and am curious if any other UF'ers are going to be there around the same time?

Now I have to book the hotel (the website says the hotel where the conference is held, Caesars, is full, but I will call Caesars to verify), corporate airfare for me, and commercial airfare for my wife.

Caeser's it pretty much right in the middle of the Strip. Any hotel you can get on the Strip will be walkable, but I think the Bellagio is right next to it, so start there is Caeser's is booked.

Otherwise ... Vegas in July? You're nuts.

Not all hotels on the strip are walkable. No way.

The GOOD hotels are near Caesars, though.
Paris, Bally's, Aladdin, Bellagio and something on the north side of Caesars are all right next to or diagonal to Caesars.

Actually, the Mirage is right next to Caesars, I've stayed there... it's VERY nice

I walked from the Monte Carlo to Circus Circus and from Paris to Circus Circus. That's pretty much the whole Strip. It would have taken about twice as long to take a cab as it did to walk considering the traffic.

Truth, but it does get damned hot. I've walked as far north as Treasure Island and as far south as the Four Seasons, expecially in the summer time it's freakin HOT

Well, that's why I said he was nuts for going in July. But then again, I was walking to a convention center in the morning and only walking the Strip at night. It was hot, but not unbearable.

I walked the entire strip, but it was in January. I can't imagine how crappy it would be to walk the strip in the 110 degree weather they have in the summer there.

We walked from the Stratosphere to the Bellagio in July. It was midnight but it was still 100 degrees. That was a long walk.

Ah, yea, at night it's fine.
During the day in the middle of summer would not be the best idea.

Yeah, it is always been real hot - and actually, summer is the "off-season" for vegas. That is why the hacker conference has always been held the last week of July in Vegas - the rooms are the cheapest then.

The heat isn't that much of a big deal during the week (the corporate part of the conference) as I'm stuck in Caesar's ballrooms from 8-8. But the weekend part of the conference (the non-corporate part) is held at a different (cheaper) hotel and they have to put up 2 big (BIG) tents and they get hot as hell.

But the biggest pain in the ass has been when it RAINS! The Vegas drainage infrastructure is not built to handle meduim to large amounts of rainfall and the roads all flood.

A few years ago, Caesars' Forum Shops (think shopping mall attached to the casino) flooded when it rained. Not a fun time to try to get around town in a taxi.

I love Vegas, it's my favorite city ever. ;) I'll invite you guys to the wedding so you have an excuse to come :p

Sounds good :D

As of right now, NYC is my favorite city ever. The first time I was there, I completely fell in love with it.
I dont understand why Americans think its so dirty and hate it.... there was something about it that I completely fell in love with.
Next in line would be Seattle and Toronto.... Both great cities

Because its loud, dirty, and crowded. Its still a cool place to visit, but why people want to live there is beyond me.
