Since the stand is so dark why do you wished to have used oak instead of birch, other then the slight difference in the density of the wood?

Had I gone with oak, I don't think I wouldn't have gone SO black. In the end, it really doesn't matter because most of the wood is covered up with equipment anyway. Probably could have just used MDF

MDF + changes in humidity = surface weirdness. Unless it's paper or melamine coated, but then it costs just as much as plywood.
