ITT: You explain "God" to me

Speaking of porn, I saw an ad for "extreme porn" or whatever while surfing the other night. It showed a woman with a plunger on her face. I was thinking "Shit, if that's all there is to it, I can do that."

Yeah, I guess you could pass for a woman...

Porn.
Let's talk about porn.
I think we have a few threads on porn - we could talk about this too . I'm sure there is plenty I can learn there.

That's really interesting. How exactly do you do that?
Well, we've done some ritual work, but mainly it's more of a belief in how one interacts with nature, and the rest of the world.

We haven't joined a circle per se, mainly because that involves a lot of trust on all sides and well, I don't trust many people. We do have a couple friends who've been 'practicing' a lot longer than we have, who would probably be our circle once we move closer together.

I've always had a deep connection to nature, and obviously strongly believe in freedom of choice on everything, and never cared too much for most forms of organized religion. I claimed to be an atheist for many years, but that didn't quite fit since I know there are many things that have not been explained yet - things I've witnessed personally, so the freeform practice and ideals of Paganism fits me pretty well.

Not to mention that many of my ancestors were probably Celtic druids :fly:

This thing about adams first wife has me curious - is this a tall tale???

'Wet dreams ' explained From the web:

Actually, when she fled the Garden, God sent three angels to bring her
back. She did not want to go back, so the Angels KILLED 100 of her
children per day. This accounts for the fact that she kill/steals
children in their sleep. During the first weeks of their birth,
children could be killed by Lilith. (Explanation for cradle death).
Only an amulet with the names of the three angels, adam, and eve,
combined with a spell, could keep her away. These amulets are still on
display in some museums.

She also seduced men in their sleep, forcing them into sex. She needed
the semen to give birth to more demons. This is how they explained the
male wet dream. In the bible, she is referred to as NightDemon or
Night Rider in Isaiah 37. ( I am not exactly sure, don't have my
reference on me)

That's from the The Alphabet of Ben-Sira, the collection of jewish folk talkes I mentioned earlier.

Isaiah 34:14, says "The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest." where Lillith is translated as 'screech owl'.

You should read Lillith by George MacDonald if you are really interested in it. It's not canon but it is good entertainment. She first appears as a succubus in Crowley's De Arte Magica though.

I've asked questions, when the questions were answered I asked more questions. I'm genuinely interested in how people think about these things and if it's read that I'm attacking then I'm being misread as that is not my intent.

I've learned a lot of people become intimidated by a q&a situation. When put in the position of answering they can go into defensive mode with their answers, as if asking questions is accusitory. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Perhaps I have some (a lot of) 'preconcieved notions' about things, but I'm still interested in hearing other points of view. I ask "why" because I want to understand. I don't expect to change anyone, other than myself perhaps. IMHO participating in discussion/debate is the best way to learn about new things and solidify my own beliefs. If people dont agree then they dont have to participate, or rag on the the people who do.

Ok this is where I have to challenge you. Hinduism is considered polytheistic, however, according to Hinduism, all of their Gods are the one god in different manifestations... and anyone who worships any god is Hindu. So, the One God is taking on the different roles and manifesting as all of these other God's but that's a polytheistic religion. So by comparison, God taking on the manifestation of Jesus, the Holy Spirit and himself is to say that Christianity is polytheistic.
in the hindu eyes yes, it appears that way. but how it is written in the Catechism explains that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are three in the same and should be treated as one.

And you are right, as much as christians talk about "witnessing" or "evangelising" to the lost, they aren't very open to giving the information they have away. So I compltely understand where you are coming from there.

I kinda wonder tho, if some of the people who evangelise just don't really know a lot of information about the faith. It's not that they don't want to share information, it's that they just don't have it. They are simply following what they've been told by their parents n'such that it's what they should do. I knew a lot people in high school that were like that. They would try to evangelise but couldn't answer the questions people asked. Then they would get defensive about it and just start judging the person, that they should change their ways because they are just wrong....because it's a sin blah blah blah, with no explaination given. And that's what turns people off. It's people like you who have actually studied the religion and can discuss it like an adult who do the most good for their faith.

This is exactly how my older brother is. He's a devout Southern Baptist and a deacon in his church. Relatively speaking his faith is new to him as he converted when he married his wife. Before then he was the definition of sinner (for awhile he was in a 3some relationship with a pair of strippers in Hawaii), he was just an all around asshole. Now he's an asshole with righteousness. And when asked any questions he gets defensive, angry and says, "Because the Bible says so"... and that's it. In the meantime he's extremely judgemental and we don't talk because we can't get past this religion thing. It's bothersome. We used to be so close, inseperable and now we're separated by faith. That seems sort of counterproductive, doesn't it?

i haven't read a word of this thread yet...haven't had time to get comfy and talkative...but i wanted to share a story...

last sunday, back in my hometown, a group of four people at the end of mass stormed the altar and pushed the 500-lb. "table" over, shattering the marble. they did this DURING mass (where they were quickly tackled and held till the police got there...) and they did it because they didn't like the fact that catholics "worship idols." now, believe what you want to, but i think that you'd better get your facts straight before you go rushing in to do something. IDIOTS!! it was dumb to vandalize something IN FRONT OF A ZILLION PEOPLE, and it's ridiculous to do something with INCORRECT INFORMATION...geez...now the FBI's involved and this will become something major, all in the name of false information.
