ITT: We talk about political parties (Whigs vs. Tories)

I think a Meritocracy would be best. We can organize cage fights to become Minister of Defense, games of Monopoly to become Treasurer, and the President would be decided by a nationally televised Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots tournament.
 
I don't think the framers were trying to avoid a system in which people are forced to choose their leader. I think they were just afraid of giving any amount of power at all to anyone outside of "the learned few".

I recall it being specifically spelled out by one of the Framers, although I can't remember who so my argument stops there. :p

Turning up to vote is mandatory, voting is not. You can put your name down on the register and leave.
