I'm attempting to learn how the stock market works. Been doing mock purchases until I'm ready to do it with real money. I don't plan on day trading, but I still have some questions for people (if anyone knows anything)

What can cause the fluctuation of the price during the months that aren't quarter ends?

For example I'm lookint at my company's stock. The price is plummeting but there's no downgrades from analysts, there's no news that causing it, and hell we're actually doing good from what I know. So why is it plummeting (no insiders are selling either.)

Any one want to give me insight? I'd love to learn.

No idea on computer stock. Motorcycle stock, specifically Harley Davidson, I can understand the fluctuations.

More people spend money for motorcycles in the spring and summer. The stock goes sky high.

Since people aren't buying motorcycles in the winter and fall, the stock falls drastically.

Maybe there is something going on in the company.

My company processes steel. When the automotive market is booming in November, we go up. When the propane gas grills start needing propane (which should be now) our stock should go up. Basically, we've diversified enough that there isn't a slow season for us.

But I guess what I'm asking is, as an investor, what are signs that stocks will go up and down besides the normal things.

My Opinion: There are a few select individuals with a ton of money that work together to drive stocks up and down. It has very little to do with actual business. Some fat cats throw their money at a commodity or other stock and bumps it up some amount then all the other traders see the rise and all jump on board throwing it up a lot higher. Then the Fat Cats drop out after riding the trend they just created and earn a small fortune.

This however applies more for day trading and swing trading...I'm sure it all averages out if you are a buy and hold kind of guy. I don't day trade anymore but when I did I based my positions on stock and market status, not on how much I liked a company or something crazy like the news. It worked for the most part.

Edit: QQQQ is pretty predictable for a day trader who watches it a lot, and it trades at very high volume so it is easy to jump in and out in a flash.

I listen to Jim Cramer's investment radio show called "Real Money" the dude that does "Mad Money" on CNN - Been listening to it for a couple of months now, all I can say is good luck friend

I'm sticking with Roths 4 now

I'm done with the market, I'm going to start investing solely in drugs and porn from here on out.

there's also no shame in a broker - my buddy has a good broker and has done fairly well

Brokers are damn thieves. They make money, they keep a lot of it. They lose your money, it's sorry charlie.

Edit, to any UF members who are brokers if there are any

Real Estate, I'm waiting for this market bubble to pop and the interest rates to climb so that property prices will fall. Then I'm going to jump in the market with cash and make a killing.

Yeah if you can pay cash that's a good plan, if not - it may be easier to buy now with the semi-low rates than with huge rates later despite cheaper prices - assuming you plan on keeping the property a long time though.

Rents are starting to climb though, which is nice :hi2u:
