No, they just had manufacturing problems that were later resolved. They never actually recalled them. The later A70s were fine, but they ended up releasing the A75 to escape the bad stigma.

ah, that's the only thing mention on canon's site about the a70. i believe it said they will repair free of charge if it happens. i haven't had any problems. but i don't take mine in the shower with me or leave it in my car for the sun to bake.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I recommend buying the most expensive Nikon Coolpix or Canon Powershot you can afford. They are very reliable cameras and I've only heard good things about them. When I get around to getting a point and shoot camera, it will be the equivalent of the 7mp Nikon Coolpix that is available today.
