Valve has diabled 20,000 user accounts for attempting to use pirated copies. They're willing to work with people who can prove they actually own a copy and just used the key to bypass the activation servers when they took a dump, but it seems that the rest of you are out of luck.

No , you do not have to log onto steam to play fuckwit. Just block steams access to the internet (either by pulling your network cable, or via a firewall like I do) and it goes into offline mode and plays just fine.
