have 2 PC's hooked up to my little ol linksys router. I can remote desktop in from one to the other, send quick file transfers and stay logged in remotely for hours on end. But the problem starts when i send a large amount of files from one PC to the other. I connect from my main PC to my second PC, try to transfer about 16 gigs or so, then about 2 minutes in, the connection dies and i cannot get it back without restarting the 2nd pc. This is constant and will only die after trying to send a large amount of files. After searching the net, i find a ton of people that have had the same problem, but no answers. HELP!

Try updating the drivers for the network cards on both computers. Also could try using a crossover cable between the two computers and see if you still get the same problem. If you do not, then your router is probably the issue. If you get the same problems while using the crossover cable, then I'd say it's probably the network cards.

edit: network cards are a dime a dozen. My personal preference is for Intel Pro/100 pci network cards. If you need gigabit, Intel also makes those too. Intel cards just work, plain and simple. Most Windows OSes, you don't even need to load drivers, as it is included with the operating system, even friggin Windows 98.

Why send the files this way? Just share a drive on one of the machines and push/pull files to and from the share. It will be a lot less prone to problems than RDP.

I'm with you on this...start->run->\\computername

thats what i am doing. Im just noting the fact that the connection is solid unless i transfer a large amount of files.

Opened up the E drive on the second PC and just maped to it from the first.

bah... didnt get a chance to work on it last night before passing out. Dug up a different set (read newer) of drivers for the old KT400 chipset so hopefully that will work. Its gotta be the drivers since the sound doesnt work either... even though the drivers i got were supposedly for the specific southbridge. :wtf:

i'll give it a go tonight and report back.

huh... The files are coming off an old WD 120gig drive and going to a WD 160 gig drive.

you can watch the files go like crazy on the progress screen, then all of a sudden the error box comes up saying the device is unavailable.

wonder if the kt400 mini ide driver is fucking things up.

That could be it too, by the drive being 'slower' it could mean anything in the path to get there including lame drivers, dusty/loose cables, firmware, etc.

im pretty sure that the drivers i installed were old or not quite the right ones. I may just nuke the install and start from scratch with the new 4in1's i found out on via arena and go from there. Ive used nforce based boards for so long, i forgot how big of a pain in the ass via chipsets can be. The only reason im using this kt400 board was because i picked it up for $20 and it came with a 2500+.

VICTORY!

the updated NIC drivers worked like a charm and i was finally able to gt ahold of a sound max audio driver that worked. Im so excited!
