spange brought up the idea at dinner tonight, and we are both interested in sending a care package or two. i wondered if any of y'all had done it before and had any tips, advice or experiences for me. it seems like a great thing to do, especially this time of year.

ok, so i didn't see the other thread before making this one. i'd still like thoughts, but it can be moved into the other one.

 To you, Spange, and eileenbunny for doing this.

I asked them what their address was. I sent random stuff. Books, toys, candy, etc.

Send them t-shirts saying "Don't shoot me my dirty heathen brothers!"

haven't sponsored one but I knew a group of guys that wanted some magazines and such to read so I sent a huge box of about two year's worth of car & driver and guns & ammo

What FlyNavy did was perfect. The guys I knew were so damn bored. They were stationed in the desert in the middle of no where and you did not leave base unless under orders. When you were off duty there wasn't anything to do.

I've been led to believe that porn and snackfoods are in short supply out on the front lines. Apparently the muslims hold no truck with Frito Lay, Nabisco, or Utz. Not till they get here and set up shop, at least.

I have stacks of Maxim, Stuff and FHM. You think they'd want old mags? What about a bobo 256mb mp3 player filled with songs about kickin' ass?

Yep. We sent about 12 boxes to the dad of a lady I work with and his troop. Things like tooth paste and mags, good TP and stuff like that. You'd be surprised the stuff they want. Then my boss paid for all the shipping. I'm sure I can get a wish list if you guys are really intrested.

question: would it be tacky to send all the sample stuff i've been signing up for? i have a box of samples of everything, and to me, they seem compact and easy, but i don't want it to look like i'm being cheap. it just seems practical to me.

Just don't let bast get hold of the list or all of the sudden it will be nothing but video games.

My oldest friend was over in afghanastan about 3 years ago (so old we call ourselves cousins) and we send his group a big care package filled with nick nacks and odds and ends to stave off the boredom.

from my experience in asking and filling requests, what the soldiers need over there is a form of minor distraction for what little down time they have. i've had a few good friends stationed in iraq and the stuff they asked for the most were books, magazines, catalogs, etc., even nice stationary so they can write to friends, family, even make a journal or doodle or something. if you want to send food, make sure it's nonperishable since it's like 100000 degrees over there for most of the year, never mind the fact that it'll take about a month or an equivalent decent chunk of time to get to them.
