I love hacks. I love reading about other people's hacks. I love tinkering around with my own hacks. I really can't explain it. Its just fun to deconstruct something and build it back up as something else. Anyone else like this sort of thing? If so, what are your favorite hacks?

theac's favorite hacks:

ITX computer in a NES:
http://crazybob.travisbsd.org/projects/ <- not the first, but the one I've found is staying most true to the original form factor.

Vacuum form table:
http://www.halloweenfear.com/vacuumformintro.html <- built from scrap, a shop vac, and a $20 walmart electric stove.

LCD Windows:
http://www.hoagy.org/virtualwindow/ <- One of my all time favs. Wish I could find some cheap matching LCDs to do this.

Sites for hacks:

I never knew what a "hack" was. The Vac thing is cool. I wish I had the paitience to build something; I have trouble standing in the same place for longer than 5 minutes so projects like these won't work for me - I'm easily distracted.

My son ( ]H[ )is a 'hacker' of electronics - I go into his room (scary) and there are all these little chip boards with thingies hot hot wired to other thingies and he shows me how they work - nothing pretty unless you like chips, dioids, and wires (which I do).

He torn the $1500 laptop I bought him last Christmas apart and took all possible peices out and needless to say it didn't work once he put it back together. He needs to work on his hacks I guess.

Damn, those LCD windows are genius. I'd get some massive ones though and turn my living room wall into a bay window.

By the way, does anyone have tens of thousands of dollars they can spare?

The slick part is the dude making them power off the 3.3V line. 1 cable and that's all.

It's bloody brilliant. If he had a closet behind the wall adjacent to the fireplace, he could keep the control box in there and the wiring would go through the wall where no one could see it. It's awesome. The panels need to be much bigger, if you can find them for cheap. Maybe import them bulk from Hong Kong. He could make a killing selling those things to yuppies with money to burn.

You don't even need that. You could buy a breaker box and install it behind the LCD. Just rewire an outlet to feed power up there, use some smart design when configuring the PC, and throw in a wireless card to be able to control it remotely. If you were really smart, you could have it run off a flash card and remove all moving parts.

I haven't thought about this at all though.

Yeah, you don't seem to have given it much thought.

You should sit down and come up with a way to make it profitable to sell as a unit for homeowners and curiosity seekers. If you do it well enough, I may even buy one.

yeah, but i would need some investment $ or an insane deal on a small lot of lcds.

this is kinda like the time i had all the plans worked out to make an htpc with integrated amp. i figured out how to cram everything you need for a home theater into 1 box. even figured out how i could custom install it into most rptvs to have it so you only need to buy speakers and you're done.
