I wanna touch on this subject while a lot of people are pointing to the recent Arizona shooting as a reason to impose stiffer gun control measures.

For those of you who are against gun ownership, I want you to take a look at this recent news story from Australia where guns are outlawed.

Police hunt armed men after classic car theft

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/10/3109542.htm?section=justin

Police investigating a home invasion in Perth in which a classic car was stolen are still hunting for a group of armed men.

Police searched a property in Bayswater and found the Mustang coupe which was stolen from a house in Wattle Grove but no sign of the six men who took it.

The group, who wore balaclavas and were armed with a gun, broke into the house early this morning.

They held the owner at gun point and demanded he sign over ownership of the 1965 Ford Mustang.

The vehicle has a GPS tracking device which led officers to a factory unit in White street in Bayswater.

Police deployed a heavily armoured vehicle called a Bearcat and officers from the tactical response unit searched the property believing the armed men could be inside.
The car was found in a laneway beside the unit.

Acting Detective Sergeant Nicole Winstone says there was no sign of the men.
"It looks as if the car has been dumped, however, investigations are continuing as to whether that was a planned dumping," she said.

The owner of the property is assisting police with their enquiries.

Forensic officers will examine the car today.

As you can see the banning of firearms has not removed them from society. It has only taken them out of the hands of honest people. I do not wish to live in a society where only the dishonest people have guns.

I debated it w/ this smart fellow on... youtube. I told him I shoot as a hobby, to hunt and own guns to protect myself0
This is what he had to say.
bad people will turn them in if prison sentences for possession are significant

you gun hobbie is making it very easy for criminals to get guns

learn to hunt with a bow hillbilly

I pretty much laffed and said... really?
yes criminals will turn in their guns if they get cash for them. and they certainly wont be likely to carry them if there are serious prison sentences for possession.

criminals would not love a ban on guns because it would be harder to get them. just as they wouldnt like really serious prison sentences for gun possession.

have you looked at the stats of how many people are killed by guns every year in the united states?

I told him that crime has never went down when guns were banned, that it has only went up.

england's crime may or may not be higher than americas, but the point is the number of people shot in england every year is an infentisimal fraction of the number of people shot in america every year. how old are you? how can you not know this?

So He only cares if people die from guns, if they die from stabbing I guess that does not matter.

I think proper gun handling classes should be taught in school to give kids a respect for guns. It'll never happen but it should.

After they take all the guns away are they going to move onto knives and sharp edge objects next?

We were allowed to shoot shotguns in my school. In one of my Ag Classes we went out back, shot at targets, used compound bows etc. I took my Hunter/Anglers safety classes all in HS as well.

My dad made me take a hunter safety class as soon as I was old enough but he had taught me gun control years before. He said that there was always going to be guns somewhere in his home so he wanted to make sure I had respect for them so I'd never mess with any of them without him.

The easiest ways to make major changes in society is by changing the next generation.

My grandfather started me early. He had an FFL for about 30 years. Then my stepdad bought me the best airgun ever when I was 5. I think I had my .22 when I was 8 or so. I was a jackwagon and sold it when I was 18 for $40 worth of beer.

boo me.

you're a whore, but in a good way. Kindof.

This is the greatest question in debunking the myth against the supposed sanctuary of a no gun environment.

the majority of people that want guns banned are terrified of them, but can use a sharp kitchen knife with at least as much skill as required to leave the digits still attached. Hell, you get enough tutelage from the Ronco and Ginsu knife commercials, let alone the Food Network. If these nimrods had only that much ability with guns this would be a non-issue.

well since a majority of crimes that involve guns the guns are not legally obtained items it doesn't matter. Just like my Aussie friend said earlier the underbelly of society is always going to find a way to obtain weapons through non legal methods. All gun control does is limit the ability for the non criminals to defend themselves.

I saw a lady talking about it on some video. She said " If it saves ONE life it's worth it" What about about how many lives it costs. In NYC you can't even have freaking stun guns. Upstanding people are completly disarmed. That's scary. Of course you could live your whole life in NYC and never have one problem. I'd rather not take my chances.

Not that I'm for gun control laws, but shamwow is right. NYC has seriously cleaned up in the past 20 years. It's safer there than in some cities in the midwest. It is possible to wonder if the stiff regulations and laws in NYC are actually working based on these stats.

I like the word balaclavas. It rolls off the tongue. I shall attempt to say it more often in my daily life.

The city's dramatic drop in crime has been attributed by criminologists to these policing tactics, the end of the crack epidemic and demographic changes

There is evidence that the data may have been manipulated to create the sense of a more secure atmosphere
