it makes the sharing more overtly limited to the specific groups you want to share your update with, rather than facebook's default "tell everyone" setting (that can actually be tweaked, but most people don't bother).

frankly i think facebook and now google are both making it inordinately hard for me to check out bikini photos of mild acquaintances and people i went to high school with.
