I'll tell you what's a great idea - open your own private french school. You would make absurd amounts of money, and then you can be my sugar momma and all that. No hanky panky, just buy me clothes periodically.

With public schools sucking the way they do all over America, I think in the next 10-15 years private school enrollment is going to quadruple. So get a piece of that. Give it some esoteric french name, and make it full immersion. Parents will eat that stuff up and you'll laugh all the way to the bank.
I totally agree with the whole public school thing. My mom works at a private school and its totally the way to go (although its attatched to a chruch so she makes peanuts)

But private school with no church involvement is major moolah! I would LOVE to open my own school. I wish I had the funds and the intelligence to do it :p

I would definetly want to make it full immersion. Thats exactly what I did for my first 8 years of education. When I then made the misteak of going to an english high school. NOT A GOOD IDEA. I struggled through my english classes terribly, where as the advance French classes bored me. I did take every class available in French but it wasnt the same. It totally sucked when I had to take math in french, and I didn't know any of the terms in english

The only thing even remotely worth it right now Sony wize is their SXRD products, but even that can be matched by JVC's HD-ILA for less money.

People buy Sony's now for the same reason your grandparents buy Cadilliacs. Its a name that used to be quality, now is dubious at best.

Fer realz. What's wrong with Vega? What is better in that price range (sub $1k)?
Don't cheap out on your main TV. Sub $1k isn't enough for a good HD set (for your living room).

At this point in time, unless your application is specialized, I see zero point in buying a non-HD set.

You can get some very nice HD LCD-TVs in the sub-$1k range for your bedroom however.

Yeah I checked out that 50 inch rear projection screen TV at best buy, and it was hot from a direct view standpoint but didn't cut it for me at any other angle

I'm probably not going with a Sony, I was at Tweeter last night and I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on this set, it's a Toshiba

please supply me with your wisdom (remember that I live to gaming)

HDMI/DVI input : check
HDCP compliant : check
VGA input : no check
HD component input : check
ATSC tuner : no check
CableCARD compatible : no check

Mixed bag there. You know my feelings about using analog displays for HD, but I think it can work for what you want. I'm telling you, when you're playing games at 10', it'll look fine. When you're watching movies at 20-25' as you said, its going to seem small.

Weight : 150 lbs ... what the f*ck are you going to put this beast on? That would be the biggest concern and who the hell is going to carry it from the store to its final resting place?

Last step would be to make a DVD of some of your favorite movies, etc. Maybe record yourself playing video games (direct line, not a cam pointed at your TV). Get scenes with vibrant color, some with fast movement, and some with very dark scenes and mixed shadows. Try to get them to hook up a high def receiver (ATSC or satellite) directly to the set (not split a million ways) and watch some live transmissions. If you like what you see, you're done. Something like this is also helpful : http://www.hqv.com/benchmark.cfm

I'd still calibrate it with something like this : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...4573640-4960757?_encoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130 or http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/630551982X/104-4573640-4960757?v=glance&n=130 or have an ISF tech come out to the house and calibrate it for you.

I know you hate Sony, but on the topic of Wega's - this TV had an AMAZING picture:

I'm not saying its all crap, but they've had several recalls on their TVs lately. Even if you find a gem, chances are that it costs far more than similar products. So its not so much hate, but a loathing of the blind brand loyality.

You want hate, then we can talk about Philips. What a bunch of junk.
