Im sure at least a few of you have heard/seen/played it allready, but its a pretty sweet game. An ASCII roguelike/simcity. The meat of it is that you generate a world (takes about 20 minutes), and take your little band of dwarves off to a cliff face in that world to build a settlement carved into the rock. You face all kinds of mundane tasks such as food gathering, shop building and resource management. But its oh so much fun. You cant controll your Dwarves directly, but can set what jobs functions you want them to do and they go off on their merry little way. They all have personalities and from time to time, can go insaine if the conditions are correct. Its a blast to watch everything unfold. Its like an ant farm.
But that not the onl ymode you can play in. Theres an adventure mode where you take your little guy off to explore the world and lore you generated. Combat is very detailed. Its a hoot to wrestle a giant into submission and beat your other opponets senseless with his corpse.
But my post cant do this game justice. I had a hard time getting into it at first because of the ASCII interface, but after about an hour and learning what everything did, i really got into it (was up till 2am this morning). You really get the feel for the interface after a bit and its really a non issue.

play it now!

Fabulous. I love ascii games. They've got that oldschool feel and they're easy to play at the office.

And to think I've wasted the last three days of the week reading Calvin & Hobbes cartoons.

Sweet zombie jesus.... is there a newbie guide to this game anyplace. It's fucking complicated!

edit: cool. This site has some decent getting started info: http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page

you do realize that i posted this link in my original post, right? ;)

my first attempt was a total disaster. Didnt know what the hell i was doing. I poked around for an hour, read the wiki and in game help and was quickly on my way. Its odd how you start looking at the characters on the screen not as text, but as graphics after a while. Its crazy seeing a little f and knowing right away its a fox or a d and knowing its a dog.

theres a HUGE thread over at the PA forums with lots of good info.

just created a world...only took like 5 mins on a 18 month old comp!

took me 20 because my PC is running on almost 3 year old tech. :(

and the world builder had 168 faults before it finally made a world.
