maybe it's a promotion. require people to keep trying codes until one works to get a free pizza. they have a strongly positive emotion (of cracking the code and getting something free) associated with the pizza. eventually the desire for that emotion becomes a desire for the pizza. a desire so strong that satisfying it becomes urgent enough to justify spending the money rather than taking the time to get another working code.
