are you saying BB got worse at connecting to exchange or the others got better?
Others got better. Activesync basically allowed the Android an iOS to be used in a corporate environment. Thus eliminiating the need for people to want to pay for a BES. By the time BES Express came out, it was too late.

everyone has had BESs in place for many years and long since paid for them when they were the only game in town

The moment BES became irrelevant was the deathknell for BB though. They were unable to compete with the App market explosion from the Jesus phone and Android. Their first attempts at a touch screen were horrid. Their only claim to fame was their awesome battery life after BES became worthless.

They failed to adapt.. They didn't think they HAD to adapt. And they will, in a year, two at most, go the way of PALM. Their history is an exact carbon copy of what happened to PALM as well.

and since it's going to take the government at least five years to start replacing them - or longer if the other manufacturers can't build something that can be properly encrypted - then we're going to be stuck with 5-8 year old phones for a while

Um...that was exactly my point. They still had to pay an annual fee. But with Activesync, that was no longer necessary....so RIM came out with BES Express which did the same thing but was free. But that was within the past 1-2 years
