that's one of the reasons I contemplate doing a full 20 years of active service. retiring before 50 would be pretty cool

Yeah but the 20 year retirement pay really isn't enough to live on. Especially when the keep increasing the Tricare premium for retirees.

Yeah my father has done 30+ years and is setting himself up nicely for a great retirement package.

Doesn't it depend on your rank when you retire?

Yes because it's based off a percentage of your highest pay so officers who retire do better than enlisted but it's just base pay. Base pay for any governement worker sucks it's the added housing pay, free heath care, etc that makes up.

I'm pretty sure getting money for doing nothing is a good deal no matter how you slice it.
