They weren't too keen on standing armies back in the day. They were raised to fight a war then decommisioned/defunded when the war was over.
Was considered a threat to elected civilian government.

I might be wrong on this but last I remember the only constitutionally mandated branch of service is the Navy. To this day, every 2 years, Congress must first vote whether or not to even have an Army, then vote how much to fund it.

Largely a formality now and may've been superseded by various acts or whatever but an interesting bit of history nonetheless.

Might be one of those things that was reconstructed during Reconstruction.

I did Jello wrestling in my 20s at a club in toronto and i remember my ex had forbid me from participating. So naturally i still did it and lied about it. HOWEVER the fucking jello dyed my palms and the bottom of my feet RED (for daaaaays) and I got caught.
