So I recently read on Aziz Ansari's twitter, that AMC, Regal and IMAX are now branding non IMAX screens (72ft) as IMAX and charging the additional $5.00 for the ticket.

The screens are apparently just slightly bigger then an a standard theater screen.

REVOLT!

They do the same intro in all IMAX screens I've been to. If you don't see the speakers behind the screen, you know you're not in an IMAX theater.

Shit, IMAX originally used to be a giant semi-hemispherical screen that allowed for some amazing visuals, so much that you could actually feel movement. ToFly is still probably the best Imax movie ever.

Todays IMAXs pale. Flat screen, just bigger? Gay.

The IMAX in Atlantic City (Tropicana) still has that same style screen. I saw The Day The Earth Stood Still.. While the movies was poo the picture was amazing.

that's omnimax. they're still around. has to be filmed with a special camera.

imax is supposed to filmed with a special camera too, on extra large film so you get decent quality on the larger screen.

ahhhh, all this IMAX hype had been IMAX digital, which is nothing compared to real IMAX.

IMAX Digital

A digital version of IMAX started rolling out in 2008. The new system is a projection standard only; there are no digital IMAX cameras.

Digital IMAX systems can show either normal or 3D content in DCI or IMAX digital format (which in itself is a superset of DCI). Being a digital system alleviates the need for the use of bulky film reels and facilitate inexpensive distribution of IMAX features, the more compact nature of digital equipment means the system can fit inside a normal multiplex cinema complex rather than the specialised buildings IMAX normally requires.

Despite those advantages, one big disadvantage is the resolution of the picture is much lower than normal IMAX. The screens used by digital IMAX installations are also much smaller (28x58 feet) than those found in traditional IMAX cinemas. Despite these facts, the digital installations are marketed simply as IMAX, drawing no distinction to the traditional 15/70 IMAX – much to the dismay of 15/70 IMAX cinema owners.[5]
