As soon as I saw "autoexec.bat" the first thing that popped into my mind was "nightmare", then I saw you said the same thing right after.. :lol:
 
I got OS/2 2.0 with the first computer I paid for myself. A slammin' 486 DX-33 with 8 megs of ram! WOOHOO!!!!!!!

my first computer of the 90's was a 486 sx-33 notebook. I was big pimpin' with that mofo :cool:
it was actually pretty small even by current standards which is kind of astounding. AST Ascentia
 
If I remember right, "command" has old DOS quirks like filename truncation for names longer than 8 characters. But I haven't actually used it in years, so...
 
but i think if you check they are different .exes.

Yes, one is a 16bit command prompt and the other is a 32bit command prompt.

You should always use "CMD", but there are plenty of basic commands that can be handled by both.
