Can you install a different hard drive into an iPod?

I was reading that iPods use a 1.8" hard drive to store music on it. I was also reading Toshiba makes a 100gb 1.8" HD. Can you get a 30gb iPod and substitute in the 100gb drive? Formatted with the correct file system of course.
 
doesn't work. there are some propaitary hardware built into the board and hard drive that are needed by the ipod software. i tried the same thing with a second gen ipod.
