I like it. Totally logical design.portable as in: easy to bring from house to vehicle to nearby camping with your cast iron pans. Not backpack worthy at all! Def too heavy for that!

I'd *prefer* a crew cab, but no one is ever in my back seat for more than 30 minutes. Crew cab = even worse turning radius, more parking issues.
Can someone suggest a good day hiking pack, that might also double as a travel backpack? I'll take anyone's suggestion other than @Floptical, as I don't want to spend $500.

Ospreys are the best. They are super expensive like a Gregory and their quality is top notch. Plus on the longer than day packs the design is super nice because it gives a gap between your back and the pack to keep you cooler. I have multiple ones from day packs to larger frame ones.

How small a day pack and how large a travel backpack?
Your biggest hump will be finding one that 'fits' YOU. It took me a few mos to try out a bunch of bags to realize one that's uber adjustable will be better than one that 'fits' right in the store. You'll be adjusting it on the fly as you consume food and/or change up what you're wearing if you're daypacking, so it should be easy to do that w/o taking it off to adjust.

For straight travel I started to use the Patagonia Black Hole bags because they can fit as a carry on and are super sturdy. You can carry them as a duffel or a pack. I wouldn't take it back country but they are perfect for travel etc.

the two straps on the back are uber important. Without those it will fit like a highschool backpack. if it's only partly filled it will settle on the bottom and ride on your lower back & be uncomfortable. With the straps if you have a lighter load you can carry it easier by tightening those way down and spreading the load all over your back.
