Battlefield 2

Whoa. That's way cheaper than I thought. Are you just buying slots on a huge server (some soft of virtual server thingie) or is the whole server yours?

I imagine the host probably splits up the box/bandwith for multiple game servers (whether it's soft serves or virtual I'm not sure of, never asked).

They probably just buy a couple beefy rigs (Dell PowerEdge :fly: ) and then have them host out 3 or 4 game servers at once.

It's working out well though, prices are down and the companies are staying in business. So if they can turn a profit somehow I say keep doing it!

It varies by host company, box operating system, features, and amount of playable slots.

For our CSS server my buddy and I pay about $40 for a 16 slot public server, which we split up the cost of among the sub-admins and ourselves based on how much admin power they have.

$2/month lets them change maps and have some basic commands.

$5/month gives the ability to slay players and kick.

so on and so forth...

I have no idea how much BF2 will cost to run initially though, but I'd expect it to be around $50/60 per month for a good sized server.

It should be closer to $50 than $100 these days. The nice thing about equipment and bandwith getting cheaper, and competition rising in the hosting industry, is that game servers have dropped in price quite a bit.

Yeah, I like to play on 24-40 player servers. Bigger ones if they can handle the bandwidth.

We thought about upping it initially, but the maps on CSS sometimes feel a little crowded with more than 16 anyway, and we didn't want to pay more, so we just left it. It's worked well for us so far, I probably would've quit CS (again) a long time ago had it not been for my ability to burn, drug, gimp, slay, slap, and ban users who do something that annoys me.

Ahh, you'd be one of those annoying admins.

Coqui has come to play there a couple of times, the urge to set him on fire was too much, and I gave in a couple of times. :fly:

In reality I usually just play. We have some additional rules on our server that most gamers aren't accustomed to (no porn sprays, no constant trash talking or bashing anyone, keep foul language to a minimum) so occasionally I have to...convince someone to play nice, but other than that I rarely use admin commands beyond map changes.

Foul language to a minimum? I can't play with you then.

Regardless of my religious affiiation I've always had that rule on the books for the servers I've ran/worked with.

If people want to scream out a stream of obscenities in the comfort of their homes when they get shot in the face that's perfectly fine, but is there really a need to type it out or throw it on the open mic? <= That's my stance anyway.

It takes too much effort to type "BITCH CUNT SLUT WHORE"

I can see the no trash talking or no porn. That's cool. I could play that.

But when I get into a game, its one long obscenity. Ask JJ or Pandora to describe bast and myself when we've set up a LAN game of Splinter Cell or Serious Sam. I'm just saying its unavoidable. I blame it on 5 years of living in a (practically) all male college.

Personally it doesn't bother me at all, I wasn't always a "good" mormon. ;) , but I do have guys on my server who it bothers, and plus children play games, so I try to keep it down to a low roar if I can. :)

I totally understand getting heated when playing though, I've slipped a few times myself, Kiwi can attest to that. :(

Oh yeah, and I'm the just don't give a shit admin. I don't think I ever kicked a person when Valve gave me admin on his BF:V server for [M] night... :fly:

The server I was adminning before this one was with AOW, their customer service is great.

I am a semi serious gamer. I play the games the way they are supposed to be most of the time and get annoyed when dumbasses goof around too much.

I agree. Nothing irks me more than when I'm gaming and people start screwing around and delaying the game for the people who just want to play.
