Australia probably doesn't have unemployment

the only things you get to choose are the confidence level, the sample, and which method to use. the rest is collected data.

yes, you can intentionally or unintentionally get bad data by picking a bad sample, and yes you can disprove a true hypothesis by using a very low confidence level and a bad sample, but that doesn't make statistics bad. that's like saying guns are bad because they kill people. statistics is just a tool, and all tools can be used improperly.
Are you a statistics major? Is this why you defend so?

Especially statistics in the news or during medical studies. OMG like 46% of people will contract cancer.

How the fuck can you consider all the variables and come up with that number? It is humanly impossible.

medical statistics are a specialist branch.

i was taught it, i am not a specialist. it allocates how a lot of things are funded in the UK. for the most part, I agree with it.

I don't agree with the allocation of vasts amount of money to HIV/AIDS, as it isn't an especially large problem, but then again I am biased.

i was a math major.

if you pick a specific stat you think is bunkum i can try to research it for you and find out where it came from. like i said, there are lots of bad statistics out there, but that doesn't make all of it bullsh*t. it just means you have to think critically whenever anyone uses stats to try to convince you of something. who is the source? what study are they referring to? how was the study conducted? how did they get the sample? etc.

what can't be discounted, though, is the usefulness of statistics, properly wielded, to answer questions about a population that can't be directly tested. for example, if you want to know what toothpaste dentists recommend you can't very well go out and ask all dentists. you take a careful sample, do your analysis, and get an answer.

there's actually a great podcast called "more or less: behind the stats" that does background checks on egregious abuses of stats in the news.

Statistics which I don't give two shakes of a hobo's nerf about.

oh well.

Where did g'day come from? Do you still use that vernacular or have you Americanized yourself already?

Good day.

And I'm not Americanized because I work with Australians.

Work together or get funded by? Is Aussyland remotely self-sufficient? Maybe not nutritionally but economically?

What are Aussyland's ties with Asian countries? Are there close agreements or ties with them?

How easy is it to get Asian electronics like unique cell phones and sharp Zaurus' you can't get in the states?

I see no reason why Australia can't be self sufficient if it isn't already.

Australia has ties with asia due to proximity. We also have a large Chinese population, like the US has a large Latino population. I believe we do have some agreements with certain Asian countries. I think we have a trade agreement with China.

Are there any/many nude beaches? If so where are they and how far are they to major cities?

Are there any beaches (nude or not) that are fairly secluded, like that are far from any major city?

What is the purpose of a Road Train when there are perfectly good airplanes for that?

I believe we have a sufficient amount of nude beaches. I do not know how many there are but you don't hear much complaining about a lack of nude beaches.

There are beaches everywhere in Australia. Very close to cities and in completely remote areas. Australia is an Island after all.

i'm almost positive it came from "good day"

You'd think that would be easy to work out?

I recently took two statistic courses and realized what a joke statistics are.

Depends what kind of statistics. Some are based on polled data, some are based on logged data.

that's because almost everyone in australia is irish or of irish heritage

and if they're not they'll say they are.

don't get me wrong - there's nothing worse to have abroad than an irish tourist or expat... well, i'm wrong there. the english are much worse.

I do not believe the most common ancestry of white Australians is Irish. I believe that would be English. There may even be more Scottish ancestry in Australia than Irish.

Remove Britain from the equation and be more like Montana or Arizona.

I would soooooooo love to live in Montana. Beautiful state.

Since 2002, HIV/AIDS funding globally has been about $57bil USD. Viagra sales top over one billion per year. Almost 1% of the world's population is infected with HIV. Over 30 million have died from it so far. I think it justifies the expense.

he means it's not a big problem in ireland.

Be specific to my region, also take into account the comparison and prevalence of HIV/AIDS compared to any cancer-related infection.

I know that homosexuals feel particularly strongly about HIV/AIDS. In Northern Ireland at least, Cancer still kills more of them than HIV/AIDS.

Obesity kills more than HIV in the US, but you mentioned the funding. I was saying the amount that has been put into HIV funding is a drop in the bucket compared to other diseases.

Malaria recieves around $0.40 per person funding in N Ireland, as we don't have a problem with Malaria. I could go on if we're going to talk about drops in the bucket.

HIV/AIDS recieves around $75.00, Cancer around $81.00.

the N. Ireland prevalance of HIV/AIDS is 0.2%, a rather more striking figure 32% for Cancer.

[I googled on these, CIA World Factbook for rates - NI Government for death rates. Funding is from my own class notes from Statistics]

Cancer, all circulatory diseases and all respiratory diseases accounted for nearly three-quarters of all deaths in 2008. And yet... Difference of $6.00?

It just so happens the Cancer lobby doesn't exactly have the stick of political correctness to beat the media with. Nor does it have a day where pageantry outweighs the real, underlying problem.

Again, I am biased. I've said that already. But the figures speak for themselves.

I guess I like the black and white of it all. Even if someone asked all the dentists what they thought, who is to know that the person swayed some dentists opinions? How a person words a question on a survey can manipulate that dentist on how they answer. It's all too 'what if'y'.

It's been several months since the course... all I really remember is this and standard deviation. :fly: School works!

If you stop sticking your dangly bits in strange holes without a nerf on, you probably don't have to worry about AIDS.

This statement, while horribly "offensive" is completely true.

HIV in a population even with births would eventually die out. It's the outbreeding and the "toxxing" of AIDS outside the pool that's caused the ongoing problemo.

Since the vast majority of aids/HIV is found in Africa and it is impossible to be gay in Africa it stands to reason they are straigt and getting infected. So what bits at you talking about? Well chikken anyway

I would love to see some campaigning on behalf of all these black children born with HIV. By all means. It's not our responsibility within our UK healthcare policy, but I'd love to see it all the same. Altruism should be encouraged. If we can save lives, and we have that ability, why the hell not?

However, you and I both know that's not the concern of people who do wear a little red ribbon a few days a year. Their concern couldn't be any less to do with black people or africans or whatever else. Their real concern is a form of rooting for what they percieve is their own team.

Chikken said nothing about homosexuality. He urged caution when dipping your rod into anything. Male or female. It seems you've taken a rather hawkish approach to this discussion, rather than one of reason.

I posted a fairly concise post above. Is there anything you take objection to in it?

Nope, that's why I am not giving you objections, just other view points.

And we do give to make sure the little black kids. Actually the program helped by Bush of all people in Uganda of all places was extremely effective and reducing the infection rates there. The World Bank and US give billions of African aid just for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

I assumed Chikken assumed homosexuality being that AIDS has been coined the Gay Disease, the highest infection percentages with intercourse are with anal sex (practiced in a high percentage of homosexuals and MSMs), and the fact he said strange holes implying ass holes because vaginas are not strange.

I do apologize that I should have quoted Chikken's post instead of yours, but I was typing on my iPhone and went to the wrong poster to quote.

Nope, holes is holes.

And 'strange' applying to the owner of said hole, not the hole itself.

yeah, loaded questions are common, especially in politics where they're called "push polls". that just goes to show how reporting of results is so terrible. if more people took stats like yourself there'd be a greater demand for complete reporting of results by media outlets, not just a number by itself that you're just supposed to swallow.
