any idea what triggered it?

Sound induced epilepsy is reasonably common in elder cats i learned after one of mine got it.

^^ its usually high pitched sounds. For mine it was crumpling paper, crunching noises, etc.

ugh on the internet I've seen people fuck with their cats by tinkling a comb because it makes them make a funny face and they don't realize they're giving their cats seizures

We had one that had regular seizures we or the vet never could figure out. Went through all the diagnostic work, etc. and was just puzzling. He was of unknown age but aged rapidly towards the end.

Not much help I know. Good luck with the kitty.

I had one cat that everyone was afraid of because of his massive size (24 lbs) but he was just a big softy, except he used to occasionally pounce on his helpless sister and inflict pain. She’d scream.

My most recent kitty got up to 22 at one point then lost much of it.

That’s one of the reasons I won’t allow myself to ever have another pet.
