A rifle is something that is rifled, or in other words has spiral threading along the inside of the barrel. Bullets catch these grooves when fired, and emerge from the barrel spinning, which gives them greater stability in flight, and thus accuracy. Think of when a quarterback throws a football, and you see it spinning as it flies through the air.
