I really hate how corporations got so good at shaving pennies for maximum profitability and you have to waste time as an "informed consumer" to not waste money. In my ideal world you could walk into a store, buy any toaster, and reasonably expect to always have toast.

We also used to repair appliances. There is a whole Ted talk about manufacturers switching to non repairable tech in the 80s.

One of my uncles after he got out of the army was a Kenmore technician with a van and all that. Made enough to buy a decent house and stuff.
