I teach everyone this trick I learned to get them to stop doing that though (really only works once they're 4-5 years old though)

When they start crying over the most mundane thing, I tell them we have to throw all their toys away, because they are big kid toys, and babies aren't allowed to play with big kid toys. It works pretty quick because they don't want to lose their toys.
