I'm no expert. We didn't have one of these parties. Never even heard of them till more recently but aren't they called "Gender reveal" parties or announcements?

they've called them gender reveal because of the conflation of sex and gender, but they're (sex & gender) not the same. also, people are afraid of the word "sex" in polite company, even when it's contextually appropriate.

anyway, I think those parties are weird. we're waiting to find out the sex of our bean until it's born, but even if we find out, we're not announcing it or anything.

That's how we did our first. Just because we wanted to be surprised. The next kid we found out because we needed to know if we needed everything new. And by then, it just seemed like a good idea for our second.

At the birth, the Dr asked what names we picked. We told her both and then she announced it's a "insert boys name here".
It was one of the greatest most moving experiences of my life. I'll never forget the way it all happened. Both times I was amazed and moved to tears.
I'm a softy I guess. But I don't care.

Congrats by the way.

its yet another way to get attention with meaningless gatherings.

That sounded way more morose than intended, but i stand by it.

other than obvious basics, what are things that, when you were a new parent, you either grossly overestimated the need for, or ended up saving your ass that you'd have never guessed you'd need?

Diaper Genie. Saved our noses. Has a feature which creates endless trash bags for months. Poop is stinky buy a diaper Genie ™

I'm anti diaper-genie. BIGLY

It holds like 40 dirty diapers. DO THE MATHS. HOW MANY DAYS OF SHIT ARE YOU GONNA STORE IN THERE??? Ours would start to smell before it was full. I tossed it within 6 weeks & she agreed it was a good move. You'll use ziplock bags everywhere else when you're out with the kid. Use them at home too.

Toss them in your regular garbage that you take out each night. You don't need to store poop.

Also, when it comes to bottles, if you're doing any formula, store the right amount of formula you'll need right in the bottle, dry, and bring bottled water. Make it as you need it.

pack-n-play: start watching for sales. Obviously you won't need when they're in the car carrier thingie full time as an infant (look at consumer reports & do get one of those). But you will shortly after. Today you can still walk around easily so when you look at them pull them out of the box set them up & take them down, see how you'll carry it.(is it easy, is there a handle, do you have to put it in a bag to carry it(that sucks)) They're a life saver. You can visit whoever you want, set it up easily, and most importantly you know how clean the sheet covered pad is in the bottom of your pack-n-play is. Bonus feature: keeps everyone elses pets at a safer distance.

It's perfect to let the kid nap safely while you're in someone elses house or doing the overnight thing. Do recommend.
