Advice The Home Improvement/Automation Thread

Yep. We've got this amazing HERMS system that we can't use cause no outlet. Some day we'll pay someone to do it.
It's a hop, skip, and jump to add a 240V outlet.

Just don't turn the f'n breaker on until you've got everything downstream of it wired up, look up the ampacity you need and select the appropriate socket and 3-conducter Romex.

panels are no problem, i did one and when i called the power company to out to shut off the power at the pole so i could cut it over from the old panel, the guy they sent out actually connected the mains for me.

not sure what you'd be doing with aluminum wiring outside of ripping it out.

Agreed on the aluminum.

The other panel stuff depends on local codes, permits, etc. You may well know what you're doing but still need a certified, currently licensed master to sign off. That doesn't come cheap, if at all.

I've no real idea how to do it. Our hot tub has a breakout box, I guess for the GFCI. I probably need one of those, I dunno. And conduit. And it's gonna be outside. Fuck it. All I know is that I really don't like working with electricity. My limit is replacing an outlet with a smart one, cause I'm dumb.

I agree 100%, find someone experienced to do it. My dad was an electrical engineer, so I have a great deal of respect/fear of electricity. My husband recently had to shoo me and my anxiety from the room when he was installing a ceiling fan.

Ceiling fans I can do in my sleep now. However, I got stung fucking with an outlet as a kid, and the terror from it lingers on.

You had a friend die from electricity and you getting stung is what resides with you?

I started writing out a capital punishment joke, but that's bad taste right?

Have a peek at the hot tub outdoor box and see if it's got room for a 2nd breaker in it - I added a 120V breaker to mine to provide an outlet for plugging in a stereo or whatever. Even if there isn't room in the box, it'd be a quick job to replace the box with one with room for a 2nd breaker. Easier than running wire all the way back to your panel.

Only catch is depending on how much your hot tub draws and how much your brewing machine does, if both of them run simultaneously they might trip the breaker in the house, so you'll have to switch off the tub briefly, but that's no big deal.

And you won't shock yourself - turn off the breaker in the house and you can monkey with the outdoor panel all you want.
