I tried to forever, but man... I don't know how to explain it, but Photoshop just seemed to do what I wanted it to do. Seems like I was always fighting gimp.

Someone turned me on to darktable, and it's a pretty easy alternative to GIMP when all you want to do is retouch light and saturation.
