Thread So does anyone actually have a problem with women serving in active combat roles?

If women leaving the homes has an effect on raising children and family values, why dont men leaving the home cause that?

Also, weak argument in anycase, roughly 1% citizens are in the US's military, less than half of those people are going to be women, probably 1/4 of THEM will be infantry.
Less than an 8th of 1% of American women going to war is going to fuck all for family values.

Added to which most army kids don't live a 'normal' life anyway, and most the ones here go to boarding schools, why does it matter who is at home?

Yeah, speak for yourself. Once again it seems like because I don't prescribe to the empathetic, maternal society subscribed gender roles I am not 'a woman'. I wish people would stop pretending men are a certain way and women are a certain way, THIS is why young boys and girls commit suicide, pushing this damn agenda on them and pigeon holing them as if they should live up to this desired expectation that is forced on them since birth. Maybe people should be examining that more.

Also complete bullshit, and historically only a recent phenomena. Women were warriors in the past, women raised armies and fought in wars, when men were off in wars who do you think protected the villages?

Did you stop reading with that sentence or something? I think I said that it was just my personal opinion and I wasn't trying to force it on anyone else. Back off. MOST WOMEN historically have stayed home with the children. There will always be exceptions and I'm really okay with that. I just think it's gone too far the other way. I don't feel oppressed by staying home and taking care of my kid. I feel liberated. I feel like I'm doing the most challenging, fun, important and rewarding job I've ever done. It's a 24/7 job and I get no vacation and I deal with more whining in one day then you probably hear all year in your office, but it's still awesome. I just think kids need more attention then they are getting and I don't understand why people have kids and then pay other people to raise their kids. Nobody forced me to be here though. My husband and I chose this because we want the best possible life for our child and we don't think that's a life where she spends 8-10 hours a day with someone else while I go out and raise just enough money to pay for that childcare. This is all my choice though. I get that. Everyone has a right to their own choices. I have a right to say that I think they are choosing wrong.

But can you prove that this role is consistent across all societies and across all time periods going as far back as the agricultural revolution?

All of this is fine. In fact, contrary to what many believe, most feminists today support your decision to be a stay-at-home mom if that's what makes you happy. It was the 2nd wave feminists in the 70s who disdained stay at home moms. I think people here are mostly concerned with your belief that women are meant to be at home raising children, since this belief has not been consistent even within the last 200 years of American history, let alone world history.

I think eileen you are coming from a position of classism if you believe women traditionally stay at home with kids, as already pointed out this is a recent phenomena and only the privileged before then could afford to have an adult not working, everyone would work within the household even if it meant women taking the kids to work, or indeed the kids working as schools were not all that widespread or attended. In Dickens' time very few people were even literate and as many pubs around my vicinity remind me due to their heritage people used to gather to hear someone who was literate read the paper out to them because otherwise they wouldn't know what was going on. For the vast majority of people, for the majority of our history women did not stay indoors, they did not just childrear, this is a societal myth that just keeps women indoors these days so that men can go out and take charge and earn the money so they feel worthwhile.
