I would like to start researching components for a rifle with the shoulder thing that goes up, but I don't know where to start. What lower, what upper, all that fun stuff. I know that we have gun nuts here, so what components do you guys like? Which companies should I steer clear of?

Random info at this point is appreciated.

Without even looking at that, I know that I will never complete that.

Also, why do none of his pics work, what the hell.
 slacker. I'm going to try it in the summer to see if I can make a E-brake handle and shift knob.

Some of the final product show, its an old thread.

KAC ambi lower

lol, no

Any reasons why? I'd like to know what the pros and cons are of whatever it is I'm looking at so I can build a list of problem issues and such.

There's no reason to get a KAC lower. You'll spend a ton of money and get no tangible increase in functionality. If you're right handed an ambi lower is just an expensive gimmick.

Lowers are just like legos. You can get a parts kit from just about anywhere (DPMS makes a good one) and then you can buy any brand lower you want. At the end of the day the only difference will be the roll mark/graphics and in some cases additional features in the lower that unless you're looking for specifically you probably won't care about. There will be a temptation to get X-brand lower because it has Y-listed feature, but for your first AR you shouldn't care about that stuff.

I would not recommend building an upper from scratch. You will not save that much money against just buying one online and having it shipped to your door complete and just mating (HA HA!..coitus) with the lower. Your upper can be incredibly simple or incredibly complicated depending on what you want. It can also range between $400 up to $2000 depending on your requirements. For a first AR you can't go wrong with something like this:

Then you just add handguard (Magpul MOE gear for your stock, grip, and handguard is my recommendation, btw), bolt/carrier, and a rear site and you're ready to go.

I'm tired of typing. More later, or ask me specific questions.

What else do you build an AR for? Other than competition and being ready for the zombpacalypse?

Main reason I want one is I just loved the feel of the M16 when I would go down and qualify every couple years.

Arent they kinda expensive to shoot? The government isn't paying for you ammo anymore... Get a .22 fgt
