Atlanta artist ftw

Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed.
Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures. He also folds, bends, rolls, and stacks multiple books to create completely original sculptural forms.

"My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception," he says.

If either of those was an original copy of "Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel" someone is going to get bitch slapped on and around the face.

hmm, 'makes my balls hurt'??

cool, but not that cool.

Even if you don't like the end product, it's utterly fascinating where the inspiration came from and how he achieved the end product. He took a book and carved away all extraneous details, leaving shaped pages and images and words. It's a very elegant concept involving a mundane, often overlooked object, even though sculpture has existed for as long as mankind. His execution of the idea is amazing. The one at the bottom, of the books stacked together and laid out in a row, is mind bottling. Yes, bottling.
